Chicken Alaska

This is the school house that Anne Hobbs came to teach in, back in 1927. She married a local Miner Fred Purdy and raised 10 adopted Native children in Chicken. Anne lived in Chicken all her life , she died and is buried behind her house. She died in 1987.



Anne's story can be read from the book TISHA.

Tisha was the name the children gave her because they could not pronounce the word TEACHER.



The school is slowly sinking , many people did not build a foundation under their houses so when they heated the building the permafrost would begin to melt and would start to sink into the muck.

Chicken shuts down in the Winter because you can not get in and out of the tiny town.

The Community of Chicken is located in the Southern portion of the forty Mile River Basin. The forty mile River has a rich history of Gold mining activity beginning with the discovery of Gold at Franklin Gulch in 1886. A rich find led to a minor "gold rush" and in 1895 Bob Mathieson found a major prospect on the upper Chicken Creek, staked his claim and built a cabin.
By the turn of the century approximately 400 miners mined on various creeks in the vicinity of Chicken.
Chicken survived the mad dash and actually grew instead of dieing after the stampede was over.

CHICKEN got is name" Chicken" because noone could agree on the correct spelling of Ptarmigan. Ptarmigan or tundra chickens were around the area, so they gave up and just called it Chicken.

The U.S. Post Office was established in Chicken in 1903 and has been in existence without interruption for over 100 years.

There is a General store , roadhouse, other old houses that remains of long ago. The schoolhouse was used by Anne Hobbs Purdy in the 1920's, it was also used for the gatherings for Holidays and the dances. Anne slept in the adjacent room to the school

I have been reading the book TISHA about her life there in Chicken and the areas around it. kinda cool seeing and touching those areas where she had been and visualize them in my head of days back in the early days of Chicken. Her grave is there in Chicken but I was not allowed to go up to her home to see it. Anne and her husband Fred adopted 10 native Alaskan children. Medical help was a long ways away so she used to tell her kids" Don't break your bones or we'll have to shoot you".


Now there are two RV parks and gift shops, a mercantile, Saloon and cafe and the remains of the Pedro Dredge used in the 40's to dredge up the Gold in Chicken

Jack London Cabin

Cache

A Cache was used to keep furs, food and perishables up high away from Bears. The metal on the four posts kept the Bears from climbing up.
Jack London born 0n Jan 12, 1876, his name London came from his step father John London.
He worked as a newsboy,worked in a cannery, became a sailor.
He got the Gold Rush fever in1897. He began writing books on board the ships. Most of his stories weren't very good till he started the Klondike stories. THE CALL OF THE WILD was his Masterpiece of a short novel. He died on Nov 22,1916 when he lapsed into a coma after taking a overdose of his medicine for his kidney & Bladder problems. Normally he would have been ok but he was very weak at the time and could not take the strain. He died at 40 yrs old. He had written more than 50 books in twenty years. Half of the logs in this cabin were the original logs from his real cabin. The other half were in Oakland CA at the cabin that was built there. Dan and I have stopped there in Oakland to see the cabin at Jack London Square.

Old Buildings in Dawson City

3rd Ave Complex

In Dawson City's History, permafrost ranks second only to fire as the bane of buildings. These structures dating from 1901, illustrate what can happen when heated buildings are placed on frozen ground. The frost melts, mixing water with the soil to form a very fluid muck into which the different footings settle at different rates.

No Restoration measures were taken with these buildings so visitors may see history as it naturally unfolds.

Dueling Moose

Sad to see these Antlers together because it meant one or both Moose died fighting during mating season. We saw these at the Visiter's center in Dawson City Yukon.

Animal sightings

Wed morning at 1AM. Pat , Barb, Rich, Karen and Jenny jumped into the Jeep to go up the mountain to see the sun set in the wee hours. As we were going up we spotted a strange animal that we have never seen before.

Found out it was a Cross Fox, a mix of a Red Fox and A Silver Fox. This one didn't look to healthy and was walking with a limp.

Further up the road we saw a Black Bear in the road crossing from one side to the other side. We were like little kids getting all excited.....not seeing one animal but two!
I was so hyped up it was hard to go to sleep that morning.

I did see a Red Fox running down the side of the road that looked like this.

Here are 2 of the most popular Class C motorhomes that people are renting to get around here in Canada and Alaska.......they are not cheap to rent. We see alot of foreigners driving them.

Alpha Pool


The source waters of the Alpha pool are hot (53 degrees centigrade) slightly alkaline and contain the strong smelling compound called Calcium Sulphate. Alpha pool water mixes with the psi Spring waters to produce pleasant temperatures ranging from 40 degres to 49 degrees C.
