Wright Brothers National Memorial

On our last day in North Carolina we spent the day at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. We are loving the senior pass that gets us into all the National Park services for free and not have to pay a fee.
The Wright Brothers were genius's, they took notes from Otto Lilenthal who was the first true glider pilot and Octave Chanute who encouraged the Wrights who used his biplane glider design to create a glider that would fly

The Wright Brothers chose Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hill because it provided isolation, high dunes, strong winds and soft landings.
A 60 foot Monument now stands on Kill Devil Hill honors the Wright Brothers and marks the hundreds of glider flights that preceded the first powered flight. Below the hill you can see the granite markers were the first planes left the ground. Very interesting area and the Visitor's Center has a reproduction of the 1902 glider and the 1903 flying machine. The original glider is in the Air & Space museum in Washington D.C. and we got to tour that museum and see all that has been created since that first flight of the Wright Brothers. Very interesting tour.
I had taken a photo of the painting of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins that day, sad to hear that Neil died the next month in August 2012
